Thank you all for subscribing and I can see the stats of who’s reading I can’t believe how many of you are reading these posts I’ve been making. Hopefully, I can do something special for you all soon!
This weekend I had the pleasure of watching the trilogy between Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder and they did not disappoint. I’ve watched plenty of classics in my time but this might be the best heavyweight fight I’ve ever watched. From Wilder attempting a different approach with body shots, to Fury with his elusive movement that he’s known for, these fighters put it all on the line. Fury almost took Wilder out early but Wilder showed that he had that power no matter what round and knocked Fury down not once but TWICE in the fourth. Wilder fatigued in the later rounds and succumbed to Fury’s pressure and went out on his shield.
There’s so much to unpack from this classic. First of all, we have to give Wilder so much respect for the last 11 rounds with Fury after taking such damage. We have to give Malik Scott for teaching Wilder new ways of setting up his strikes and not just going in there trying to throw Wildly. With the heart he showed in there, not too many other fighters would be able to. His stock did not go down after this fight and he still stays at the top of the heavyweight division. The only thing I didn’t expect from Wilder was not accepting a handshake or giving Fury respect post-fight. I know fighters have to build their fights but at the end of the day, as competitors, we show respect after win or defeat. This is what this sport was based around, honor. I hope they can resolve this “beef” soon.
As for Fury, who suffered from Covid twice before finally being able to fight, he showed why he is the best heavyweight on the planet. He said he would KO Wilder and he went and did exactly that. Even being rocked, I felt Fury would get up especially after being almost completely knocked out in the first bout with Wilder. He showed true determination and stuck to his game plan by not giving Wilder any space and laying on Wilder to tire him. I feel Fury getting past Wilder he no longer has to worry about any other Heavyweight with that amount of one-punch power. Not to say the road or title defenses will be easy but it’s one less issue to worry about. I’d love to see Fury defend the belt a couple of times, and he has plenty of choices. I see Fury returning next spring against the winner of Dillian Whyte/ Otta Walin. The timing would make perfect sense as these two go toe to toe next week.
Makenzie Dern took her second loss in a 5 round one-sided victory for Marina Rodriguez. Marina showed her experience and her all-around game that Dern has not fully developed yet. Dern had her moments on the ground but that wasn’t enough to get the decision at the end. I’ve always been impressed with Rodriguez and how well-rounded she is. Ever since her close loss to Esparza, I felt she would stay within the top 10 of the women strawweight division and now she has officially entered the top 5. I feel a good foe for Rodriguez next would be a rematch with Esparza, they had such a competitive contest, and timing-wise it works perfectly unless Esparza wants to wait for the title shot.
Finally, we get a matchup we have been waiting for a very long time. Leon Edwards and Jorge Masvidal get to settle the beef this December at UFC 269 in a three-round bout. I feel this bout could’ve headlined a card but of course, neither gentlemen hold titles. Masvidal famously gave Edwards a three-piece and a soda backstage(video below) on a London card and Edwards has been looking for revenge for over two years now. This is a great fight for Leon becomes with Masividal a lot of eyes will be on them and that is something he has been struggling with. For Masvidal, this can automatically put him right back into title contention which he has been yearning for. Edwards has been on a very long win streak and a win over the like of Street Jesus would earn him that coveted title shot against the winner of Usman vs Covington. We have a fun one here ladies and gentlemen!!
